The northeast has always been forgotten and just sidelined for years, but now all eyes are on these states with the election results that came out of the political parties in four of the seven sister states – Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland.

Finally, the national parties take heed to the region, giving them a much required recognition in terms of political value. Recent news stated that the regional party of Mizoram finally came into power after being ruled by the Congress for 3 consecutive terms. Similarly, the other sister states have somehow gotten rid of the Congress party rule, except for the state of Meghalaya. States of Nagaland and Tripura have seen this shift and political scientists are claiming that this result has some serious consequences on how things are going to be in the upcoming general election. What does this mean for the whole political scenario? Well, that’s simple. It seems like BJP has a good hold on the seven sisters. Is it something to worry about? We’re not sure. The party is known to be a brilliant and strategic one. Of course it is good news for the BJP and the prospectives look good. Speaking of strategies, BJP has made it a point to remember when it came to understanding where they could lose voters. Comprising of 8 states, the Northeast region of the country is a good place to start. With the recent elections in the Northeast and more specifically, in the states of Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Nagaland, it is safe to say that BJP is in the lead.Well, this is what the scene is. Mizoram has finally established their power over their state. Being under the Congress rule for more than 15 years, this change for them, some say, may be good. Meanwhile in the states of Tripura and Nagaland, the BJP seems to have a good grip. Even in Assam, they tried to get across with the people by creating alliances with the regional parties of the state.

Many might have this question in mind. How did the BJP get a majority vote in some of the states when the population is dominantly christian? The party has been smart with this. All they say is that they respect the local culture and will help preserve it. So what does all of this mean? Yes, the BJP has done a good job in favouring them. The plans that they came up with during the past few years have been effective, about the Development of Northeast region programmes and schemes. Sources say that allotted about Rs. 5,000 crores for this initiative in order to improve trade and tourism. Bringing them into the limelight – that was the aim of the party and somehow they have managed to do just that. Although most of the region is in the hands of the BJP, directly and through alliances, there still remains the state of Meghalaya which has a hung assembly. So, let’s just wait to see what comes out of that one.
